ORVIS VINTAGE 1950 CENTER HOLE CREEL OVERLAP TOP WHOLE WICKER!

This handsome whole-wicker fishing creel represents Orvis’s mid-century revival of the traditional center-hole design. By this period, most creel makers had long since adopted an offset opening, which offered easier access and allowed longer fish to be placed inside. Orvis brought back the earlier center-hole configuration in its 1950 product catalog, giving this creel a distinctive appearance reminiscent of much earlier angling baskets.

Entirely handwoven from sturdy whole wicker, the creel remains in excellent condition, with no breaks in the basket. It retains its original leather closure strap and metal buckle, while the naturally aged wicker has developed a warm, rich patina that beautifully emphasizes the character of the weave.

The creel is accompanied by the canvas carrying harness found with it. This harness is an aftermarket accessory and was not originally supplied as part of the basket.

Measuring approximately 14½ inches across the bottom by 7 inches from front to back and 9 inches high, this scarce Orvis center-hole creel is a particularly attractive example of the company’s 1950s sporting goods. It would make an excellent addition to an advanced angling collection or a distinctive display piece for a home, cabin, or lodge.
