SCARCE 17" SPLIT WILLOW "LOW BOY" CREEL !

This unusually scarce, low-profile fishing creel—traditionally known as a “Low Boy”—is tightly constructed of split willow in a fine French weave and remains in excellent condition. Its broad, shallow form distinguishes it from the taller, conventionally shaped creels commonly produced during the early 20th century. Because Low Boy creels were made in far smaller numbers and fewer have survived, they are especially difficult to find and are generally more desirable to collectors.

The finely woven basket is finished in a warm copper-orange stain and extensively trimmed in complementary copper-brown leather. Particularly attractive details include the broad, crossed leather reinforcing panels, leather-bound edges, central closure strap with metal buckle, carrying handle, rectangular opening in the lid, and an integrated measuring rule along the upper edge. The rich, naturally aged surfaces give the creel exceptional character and visual warmth.

Creels of this type were among the woven baskets imported from Japan during the 1930s and subsequently fitted with higher-quality saddle leather by prominent Oregon leatherworkers such as George Lawrence, Peters, McMonies, McKeenan, A. E. Nelson, and Clark for their sporting clientele.

No carrying harness accompanies this creel; harnesses were generally purchased separately as aftermarket accessories rather than supplied with the basket.

Measuring an impressive 17 inches long by 8½ inches wide and only 8½ inches high, this rare Low Boy is a handsome and highly collectible angling artifact—equally suited to an advanced creel collection or as a distinctive display piece in a cabin, lodge, or home.
