VINTAGE SHAKESPEARE “HONOR BUILT” LANDING NET
A handsome vintage landing net by Shakespeare, bearing the company’s distinctive “Honor Built – Shakespeare” shield decal on the throat of the handle. With its laminated hardwood construction, warm aged finish, and deep traditional net bag, this is an attractive example of the classic wooden landing nets once carried by anglers.
The net features a broad teardrop-shaped wooden hoop flowing gracefully into an integral hardwood handle. The frame and handle appear to be constructed from contrasting laminated woods, creating an appealing, darker center section bordered by lighter-toned wood. Years of use and aging have given the wood a rich amber-brown patina that adds considerably to its vintage character.
The original knotted mesh netting remains attached (a small hole at the bottom, not seen) to the frame and has the deep bag characteristic of period landing nets. The mesh displays age, wear, and some irregularity consistent with an older piece, while retaining the wonderfully authentic appearance collectors often seek in vintage angling equipment.
Of particular interest is the surviving green and gold Shakespeare shield decal, reading “HONOR BUILT – Shakespeare”, positioned prominently at the base of the hoop. The end of the handle also retains a small metal fitting, likely originally intended for attaching a lanyard or retaining cord.
An appealing and highly displayable piece of American angling history, this Shakespeare landing net would complement a collection of vintage rods, reels, creels, and other early fishing accessories. Its combination of laminated hardwood construction, original identification decal, aged netting, and honest fishing patina gives it considerable character.
Condition: Vintage used condition with expected age-related wear to the wooden frame and handle. The netting shows age, discoloration, and areas of wear/irregularity. The Shakespeare “Honor Built” decal remains clearly visible.
